Luxfer - Aluminum Scuba Cylinders

A superior alloy makes a superior aluminum scuba tank.

Luxfer Gas Cylinders offers a broad range of high-pressure aluminum scuba cylinders, as well as the world’s only hoop-wrapped composite scuba cylinders. More than 50 years ago, Luxfer developed the world’s first aluminum scuba cylinder in collaboration with the legendary Jacques-Yves Cousteau, inventor of the original Aqua Lung®1 equipment that revolutionized underwater diving.

L6X® Aluminum Cylinders

Luxfer’s all-aluminum SCBA and life-support cylinders have been the industry workhorse in North America since the early 1970s. Up to 40% lighter in weight than comparable steel cylinders, Luxfer aluminum SCBA cylinders are non-magnetic and extremely corrosion resistant—unlike corrosion-prone steel cylinders.

Since 1988, Luxfer has manufactured these cylinders from its own proprietary version of 6061-T6 alloy. Now marketed as L6X®, this exclusive aluminum-magnesium-silicon formula was specifically designed by Luxfer metallurgists to provide improved durability, fracture toughness and resistance to tearing and cracking. More than 40 million L6X all-metal and composite cylinders in service around the world have an exemplary record for safety and dependability. Manufactured to all recognized international standards, L6X SCBA and life-support cylinders are available in a broad range of sizes and capacities.

L6X® Hoop-Wrapped Cylinders

Introduced in 1976, Luxfer hoop-wrapped composite cylinders consist of an aluminum SCBA cylinder with its barrel reinforced with high-strength fiberglass or carbon wrapping to permit higher-pressure filling. Up to 40% lighter in weight than comparable steel cylinders, Luxfer hoop-wrapped SCBA cylinders are non-magnetic and extremely corrosion resistant—unlike corrosion-prone steel cylinders.

Since 1988, Luxfer has manufactured the aluminum liner of these cylinders from its own proprietary version of 6061-T6 alloy. 1 Aqua-Lung, Aqua Lung and Aqualung are registered trademarks of Aqua Lung International and Aqua Lung America, divisions of Air Liquide. Co-inventor of the original Aqua-Lung was Emile Gagnan.
2 It is the responsibility of the cylinder owner to maintain Nitrox suitability by keeping the cylinder cleaned and prepared for use with oxygen and oxygen-rich gas blends in accordance with regulations in effect in the country in which the cylinder is being used and by using only oxygen-compatible components with Luxfer cylinders in oxygen and oxygen-enriched applications.
